The Ag. TRACE Commander General/CEO, Cmdr. Omonayajo E.A. F-CAI, who was duly represented by Agbara Divisional Commander, Cmdr. Onasoga A.O. at the lecture of 280 NYSC members held at Crawfold University, Igbesa on “Best Road Safety Practice; Consequences and Effect of Drug Abuse on Traffic Safety.”
The Assistant Local Government Inspector (ALGI), Mr. Ogundele welcomed all participants to the programme and formally introduced the TRACE delegates and others’ presence.
A comprehensive lecture was delivered Officer Apari P. W. on “Best Road Safety Practices,” emphasizing the importance of strict compliance with traffic laws and regulations. He highlighted the need for the proper use of seat belts, adherence to speed limits, avoidance of reckless driving and distraction, observance of traffic signs and signals, regular vehicle maintenance, defensive driving, and the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or other psychoactive substances. He encouraged the corps members to cultivate responsible road-use habits in order to safeguard their lives and those of other road users.
The Divisional Commander, Cmdr. Onasoga A. O. complemented the lecture with a presentation on effects and consequences of drug use on Road safety. He explained the three major factors responsible for road traffic crashes:— Human Factor, Mechanical Factor, and Environmental Factor with particular emphasis on the human factor, which remains the leading cause of road crashes. He further explained that the use of alcohol and illicit drugs impairs judgment, reduces concentration, slows reaction time, causes blurred vision, affects coordination, and leads to loss of vehicle control, thereby significantly increasing the risk of road traffic crashes.
The Divisional Commander also highlighted the consequences of drug-impaired driving, which include:- Loss of lives and property;- Serious and permanent injuries;- Physical disability;- Damage to public and private property;- Loss of employment and livelihood;- Psychological and emotional trauma to victims and their families; and- Legal consequences, including prosecution and other sanctions.
An interactive question-and-answer session followed, during which the Divisional Commander provides insightful responses to questions raised by the corps members. His presentation was well received and highly appreciated by the participants.
In his closing remarks, the Local Government Inspector (LGI), Mr. Kuoye expressed his appreciation to TRACE and other sister agencies for their continued collaboration and commitment to educating corps members on road safety and other civic responsibilities.
He encouraged the corps members to take advantage of such knowledge-based training programmes and apply the lessons learnt to become responsible citizens and positive contributors to society.
